A number of different hormones including Oestrogen and Progesterone drive your monthly menstrual cycle and they have a significant influence on the skin.
There are four key phases in the menstrual cycle: menstruation, the follicular phase, ovulation and the luteal phase.
When you start your first day of your period your oestrogen and progesterone hormone levels are low. Body temperature is also often lower and blood circulation may be slower. As a result during this phase our skin can look and feel dull and dehydated. However, it may also be dealing with the aftermath of spots from the week before.
During this phase, you should use a gentle but active cleanser, my favourite is Jan Marini Bioglycolic Cleanser. Also, using BLUE LED light therapy to kill any bacteria build up on the skin will help during this phase of your cycle. You should also use products that hydrate like a hyaluronic acid, and something slightly exfoliating to shed any dead skin cells.
This is the perfect time during your phase to have a facial, and a microdermabrasion, light peel, or a radio frequency device with exfoliation would be ideal.
The follicular phase accounts for the first half of your menstrual cycle and lasts until ovulation occurs. As the name suggests this is when the pituitary gland releases the follicle stimulating hormone FSH which prompts the ovary to product a number of tiny follicles each with an immature egg. Around day 10 one of the eggs matures, and oestrogen levels start to rise. This is generally good for your skin and you should notice it beginning to become clearer and less oily. Between day 8-14 of your cycle is usually when your complexion is at ts best, with a natural healthy glow.
During this phase, choose products that will maximise your radiance. Vitamin C for instance is an excellent option, and RED LED light therapy is also great during this time for collagen banking.
Some of my favourite Vitamin C serum’s are: Jan Martin C-ESTA Face Serum (Vitamin C), Omorovicza Daily Vitamin C. Medik8 C-Tetra Serum.
Two weeks before menstruation starts again, during ovulation, the skin Oestrogen levels peak, hormone levels rise rapidly and skin can become oily again. Pores may look more noticeable during this phase, make sure you are double cleansing throughly, so twice a day to keep them clear. I recommend using the Jan Marini Bioglycolic face cleanser.
Clay mask treatments are also worth considering during this time of the month. I like to use the Omorovicza Ultramoor Mud mask.
Spots before my period?
The luteal phase. This is when the body produces more progesterone to thicken the womb lining. Elevated levels of progesterone can also lead to higher levels of sebum which in turn can block pores and create an environment for bacteria to thrive. Oily skin, inflammation and acne breakouts are a common consequence and often last until progesterone levels drop again and your period begins.
Products containing salicylic and glycolic acid are your go-to products during this phase as they will help to control excess oil levels and keep the skin clear.
Try Medik8 SOS, featuring salicylic acid and products that contain Niacinamide to calm inflammation and visibly reduce any breakouts.
